Not only Dziewin (Slavic dziewa - virgin) founded by the Slavic Morzyczanie tribe who dwelt on the banks of the Elbe was a proof of how virgins were respected among the ancient Slavs. Far to the East, at the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers, the forefathers of comtemporary Slovaks founded in the 8th century a Slavic castle, to sucessfully defend their land against frequent attacks of the Germanic Eastern Franks. The ancient name of the castle, Dowina was mentioned for the first time in written resources these words: [Luis the German] Hludovicus rex in mense augusto ultra Danubium cum manu valida profectus, Rastizen in quadam civitate, que lingua gentis illus Dowina dicitur, obsedit. Meginhard Fuldensis [of Fulda] who wrote this in 864 AD, added with his own hand a translation over the word 'Dowina': id est Puella, in English: i. e. girl. which does not seem appropriate to translate the literal meaning of the Slavic 'dziewa' or 'deva' - Latin 'virgo', English 'virgin", and NOT Latin 'puella', English 'girl' (cf. Annales fuldenses sive, Annales regni Francorum orientalis ab Einhardo, Ruodolfo, Meginhardo fuldensibus Seligenstadi, Fuldae, Mogontiaci conscripti, cum continuationibus ratisbonensi et altahensibus ; post editionem G.H. Pertzii recognovit Fridericus Kurze. Accedunt Annales fundenses antiquissimi). Later, both the Celts and the Romans built strong fortresses there. In the Roman ruins, the first Christian church located North of Danube has been identified. In the 13th century, a stone castle was built to protect the western frontier of the Hungarian Kingdom whose existence was documented in 1271 and a reference to a castelanus de Devin appeared in 1326.
