Is there a reliable and cheap device to detect ovulation easily
without any mess?
Δρ Γεώργιος Παπανικολάου 1883 -1962 Dr George Papanicolaou
Dr George Papanicolaou the greatest benefactor of humanity together with colleagues saving lives of women infected with cervical cancer by their promiscuous lovers and unfaithful husbands.
He invented the Papanicolaou test, commonly known as the Pap smear or Pap test, which is used worldwide for the detection and prevention of cervical cancer and other cytologic diseases of the female reproductive system. "He refused to patent his discovery. He did not wish his contribution to science and mankind to be associated with financial gain." ('George Papanicolaou - A Pioneer in Medical Research' by The Hellenic Foundation for Culture' on youtube).
He also for the first time described a phenomenon of ferning of the cervical mucus (Papanicolaou, G.N: General survey of a vaginal smear and its use in research and diagnosis. Am. J. Obstet. Gynecol. 1946 Mar; 51:316-28)
"The cervical mucus when dried produces arborization or fern formation due to a crystallization of sodium chloride in the mucus, when there is unopposed estrogenic effect. A markedly diminished estrogen will give none of this arborization phenomenon due to absence of appreciable sodium chloride. Excess unopposed estrogen causes marked arborization. When progesterone appears after ovulation, the secretion of the sodium chloride is halted and the arborization phenomenon, or fern-like crystallization, disappears." (A Textbook Of Gynecology by Laman A. Gray, M.D., F.A.C.S 1960)
Soon before ovulation the salt content in the cervical mucus rises. The salt crystals that form in dried cervical mucus have more and more fern-like structure. This can be detected by placing a sample of cervical mucus on a glass, letting it dry, and observing under magnification. The ovulational ferning occurs in some other body fluids. Instead of cervical mucus, saliva may be used allowing observation much easier without any mess.
In 1968 dr José María Biel Casals from Spain got his Improved Portable Microscope Manual patented and now billions of girls and women who can afford buying such a device for ca 20 - 30 dollars can predict ovulation precisely during each menstrual cycle.
